Abra, designed by Claudio Bellini for Bernhardt Design
The goal of this collaboration with Claudio Bellini was to create a fun and playful chair while maintaining a comfortable posture and position that would allow for use within residential, hospitality, and commercial spaces. I led the development of Abra as we worked through 7 different iterations of the chair. The design of the chair evolved as we developed the chair, Claudio worked directly with the development team in order to get the chair to fit his vision and standards as well as our own standards within Bernhardt Design.
While I led development my direct responsibility was to 3D model the chair and to create 2D drawings, prototypes were created by our framing and upholstery team and our wood shop using those drawings. We very quickly dialed in the comfort of the chair while the rocking portion took the most brainstorming. The goal was to have a smooth uninterrupted movement from front to back, in order to achieve this the rail is 4 pieces of solid oak joined together then shaped to create smooth transitions and feel.
