Hidden Joinery Chair

Design and fabricate a seating piece that can be reproducible. 15 weeks

Research

My research explored the use of overlapping lines within architecture and bicycle frames and looking at how those overlaps aid in structural integrity while keeping the joinery hidden.

Along with overlapping lines, I wanted to use color as a detail similar to the De Stijl design period.

Concepts & Refinement

Designed from the side profile, I explored multiple different iterations to look at different connection methods as well as potential points for movement.

I made jigs to use for a volume study to create my final refinement and later repurposed the jigs to be used for the final prototype.

Process

In order to keep the joinery hidden, round bar stock was used and on each tangent point the bars were drilled through and later plug welded to create the hidden joinery look.

Brackets were combined with machined delrin to create a swivel movement on the back rest.
