Two Material Shelf
Utilizing both wood and metal, design a shelf that serves a specific purpose. 3 weeks
Initial Concepts
Due to time constraints of this project we dove straight in to concept development with no time given for research, the only constraints be that the shelf is meant for a specific object and that it be made out of wood and metal. This project served as a introduction to wood working and metal working.
Ideation started with the purpose, how to display an object that holds value specifically to me?
Concept Refinement
During refinement, I chose to lean into showing the empty space between my wooden elements and highlight that space with my metal components. One idea for what I wanted to display was a bicycle frame, I have a love for bikes and wanted to create a shelf to display the first mountain bike that I had bought with my own money.
My final concept and what I decided to manufacture is made of 4 pieces of wood and utilizes multiple pieces of aluminum tube to create an effect of floating or even an explosion view of the different components.
Robot Feet
The shelf is constructed with American walnut and aluminum tubes. The tubes act as a concealment for the socket head cap screws as well as present the shelf with floating elements.
I chose my specific object to be a mountain bike frame, however it can be used generically as a shelf as well.
