De Stijl Inspired Nightstand

Design and fabricate a cabinet using historical references and influence, while using two methods of concealment. 15 weeks

Wanting to further understand the De Stijl design movement I looked into graphic designs and posters to understand how they utilized straight lines and limited colors.

Research

After looking at the colors of De Stijl, I looked into the color trends for Spring 2021 and how to apply those to my design.

Initial concepts explored some variety of concealment/storage methods including both doors and drawers, however doors did not seem to fulfill what I wanted for my 2 methods of concealment.

Concepts & Refinement

Further refined concepts looked at a cabinet within the main cabinet and later turned into a sliding tray attached to the roof of the cabinet.

After making a 1/4 scale model and a volume study, I realized the body of the case would need to be much slimmer to create a much more visually appealing end result.

Process

The case is made from maple, the legs are ash dyed with India ink, and the drawer handle is made using aluminum with an anodized finish
