439 Cardboard Chair

Cardboard Chair

Design a cardboard chair that can be made from two 4x8 sheets of cardboard. 8 weeks

Research

For this project I was interested in exploring the use of repetition for both a visual and structural feature.

Along with repetition I was curious to see if I could incorporate that with a internal cantilever form.

Concepts & Refinement

Initial concepts revolved around using egg crated internal structure with a exterior skin of cardboard and others looked at pushing tubes through side profiles to create their structure

I chose to move forward with a nesting side profile to be efficient with my material and to have interesting internals.

Process

Starting with a 1/4 scale chipboard model, all pieces were cut by hand and assembled only with tape. Glue was not allowed for this project.

The chair is made up of 8 side profiles, 13 “extruded” triangles, and 3 slats that form the sitting platform. Like the 1/4 scale everything was cut by hand with a X-acto knife in order to maximize the most material.

I nested each side profile within the 2 provided 4’ x 8’ cardboard sheets and used the remaining material to formulate my mock extrusions and seat boards.
